As they prepare for Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers won the lottery by drafting Brock Purdy with the 262nd and last choice of the 2022 NFL Draft.
During the draft, Shanahan and other 49ers coaches disagreed on the Iowa State product's potential benefits. On 95.7 The Game's "Willard & Dibs" on Thursday, NBC Sports' Peter Kings discussed 49ers evaluators' thoughts before the choice.
During the 20–30 minutes they were debating their next move, Kyle Shanahan remarked, ‘I adore this quarterback, this is the man I want to take,’ King claimed. “Suddenly, a chorus of coaches says, ‘Oh, man. Linebacker and receiver are needed; they'll aid us. We have two quarterbacks. Shanahan traded three 2021 first-round selections for Trey Lance. Who cares if we lose a quarterback?
"But Kyle Shanahan and the management of this team made a decision [that] ticked off some people in [the 49ers' war room] when they took Brock Purdy because who knew about an Iowa State quarterback?"
The anonymous San Francisco personnel likely couldn't have imagined Purdy's effect less than two years into his 49ers tenure. Shanahan believed it was draft-pick-or-bust for the 49ers to get Purdy.
Kyle Shanahan understood one thing, and it was the most crucial, therefore he took Brock Purdy with the 262nd and last choice in the 2022 NFL Draft. He knew Brock Purdy would not join with the 49ers in free agency. He knew. He said, ‘If we want this man, if I love him that much, we need to chose him.’ So they chose him.
They missed out on potential team members due to the influx of undrafted rookies each year. However, the [49ers] coaches who opposed Purdy's pick are likely pleased that Kyle Shanahan got his backup quarterback and said, "Hey, we're taking Brock Purdy.
The 49ers had a quarterback before the 2022 NFL Draft, but Shanahan uncovered a gem. Purdy has completed 68.7% of his passes for 5,654 yards and 44 touchdowns in 25 regular-season games for San Francisco since taking over in late 2022.
