Cornbread is a Southern favorite with a slightly sweet, crumbly texture. Classic Southern cornbread recipe:
Ingredients: 1-cup cornmeal 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 Tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda Add 1/2 tsp salt and 2 tbsp granulated sugar (optional for sweeter cornbread 1 cup buttermilk 2 big eggs 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter
Instructions: Preheat oven: Heat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a 9-inch square or round pan.
Mix dry ingredients: Mix cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large basin. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate basin, mix buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter. Blend wet and dry ingredients: Combine wet and dry components. Just blend. Some lumps are alright; don't overmix.
Bake: Fill the baking pan with batter and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool and Serve: Slice and serve the cornbread after a few minutes of cooling.
Optional Changes: Add-Ins: Add diced jalapeños, grated cheese, or corn kernels for flavor and texture.
Instead of buttermilk, add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to a measuring cup and fill it with milk to the 1-cup line. Wait 5 minutes before using.
Cornbread can be baked in a prepared cast-iron skillet for a crustier edge.
